MaSh-Up

MaSh-Up: A mixed media installation wherein all the methods that I utilize, collide, and respond to, specific locations.

The work is ever-changing as I add, discard, or alter parts. On several occasions, I’ve removed sections of the gallery’s drywall, repurposing it in the next iteration; thereby, I create an additive progression that references the durational nature of the project and builds its history and narrative through its inventory. I cut paintings in halves, thirds, quarters, etc., for the installation to bend them in and around corners or up onto ceilings and floors. In addition to installing finished works, new iterations are created on the gallery walls. The ‘additions’ I make to my finished works create repetitious patterns with wooden shapes/forms, cast concrete, stencilled images, and direct serigraph prints onto the gallery wall to adorn the entirety of the space and bring all elements together into a cohesive whole. Sculpture plinths are addressed similarly, harmonized with paintings and drawings with shelving attachments which display multiple works. Plasma torch, hand-cut, steel panels and sculptural renderings in continuous-line are hung throughout the space, which cast their shadows, adding to the cacophony of visual cues. Also, found objects collected throughout this installation will be added to this amalgam, referencing the element of continuum and site. The entirety of the gallery or space becomes one work, and the outcome reflects the many facets of my practice, both formally and conceptually. This marks the beginning of the transition from space into place, which highlights notions of placemaking embedded in my interdisciplinary art practice.

My figurative works are derived from what I refer to as ‘Intuitive Line Flow’ related to the Surrealist concept of Automatism, allowing the subconscious to guide the hand. In this system of chaos constructed in the MaSh-UP, I subvert the gallery or space to create an experience for the viewer.

I want to create an intimate connection with my audience, setting the place for this, I share as much as I can with the viewer, but their path through the immersive space becomes their own. Each viewer puts the cues together in a manner which resonates with them and in such a way that this experience allows them to touch something timeless, beyond themselves, ethereal and transient. The MaSh-UP is a metaphor for getting through the cacophony of everyday life; my line offers a way through or a place for solace amid the chaos. I provide the terrain of possibilities; the viewer decides which will be explored, finding trace experiences and creating a new understanding through reflection, reflexivity, and contemplation amid the cacophony of organized chaos. It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or you may have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, how you tell your story online can make all the difference.
